History of a Spa Town

The road from finding medical water to being awarded a spa town was long in Sárvár.
Both private investors and the town leadership were motivated by developing the tourism in Sárvár.

Medical water has been present since 1961 when the valuable water was found in the course of the search for oil.

There are two kinds of waters in Sárvár: the water in the medical pools originates form a depth of 1.200 metres and has a temperature of 43 °C, the other one is coming from 2.000 metres at a temperature of 83 °C, having sodium-chloride, hydrogen-carbonate, iodide, bromide, fluoride and several trace elements as its main constituents.

The medical water based tourism enhanced from the beginning of the 1980ies. The spa and the camping had an average of 160.000 guests a year. Back then there was a football field at the place where todays the spa is. The cornerstone of the Danubius Thermal Spa was laid 1983 and it opened two years later within the frame of the Austro-Hungarian tourism cooperation.

The Medical and Wellness Spa opened its gates 2002, thus further strengthening the town’s position on the health tourism market and increasing its tourism in general.

As a recognition of its high quality services the spa in Sárvár was admitted into the ranks of the Royal Spas of Europe. No other Hungarian spa received such honours so far.

In April 2007 the spa won the EuropeSpa-med quality award, a year later the Certifying Commission of the Hungarian Spa Association ranked it into the highest, four star category.

The second step of spa development was completed 2010, with the help of the investment of 3 billion HUF the complex became a family spa with visitors totalling 720.000 in the year 2011.

As a result of key developments new hotels came into existence (Vital Med Hotel, Park Inn Hotel, Spirit Hotel), apart from that several pensions and apartments opened their gates. The increase in the number of commercial accommodation is well shown by the fact that while 2001 there were 26.000 visitors, ten years later the town had 444.000 visitors, thus becoming the seventh most frequented town in Hungary.

By 2011 Sárvár was ready to earn the title of a spa town. Its natural circumstances meet the requirements of a spa town: its medical water is excellent and certified, the natural environment of the spa town is well looked after; its air is excellent; noise levels do not exceed border values. Also the socio-economic criteria are met: the municipality is prestigious, Sárvár is known in- and outside the Hungarian borders; the image of the town is good, it is a target of both domestic and foreign tourism, there is no polluting industry, or other economic activities; there is a proper number of accommodation at the right quality.

Healing water

The most attractive part of the Sarvar area is without doubt its two completely different types of healing water upon which the development of Sarvar is based.

In the Sarvar area, healing water which springs from a depth of 1200 metres reaches a temperature of 43 °C, while the water which originates from a depth of 2000 metres has a very high salt content and reaches the much higher temperature of 83 °C.

From the 83 °C rich saline water, the famous Sarvar crystal is produced through the process of evaporation. This salt abundant medicinal healing water can be used effectively in the treatment of certain ailments and locomotive diseases as well as for dermatology and gynaecology.

The 43 °C thermal water contains alkaline hydrogen carbonates and is especially suitable for the treatment of locomotive disorders, rehabilitative after-treatment (including sport injuries), neurological complaints and muscle relaxing baths.

Field of application:

The pools (baths) of the complex are filled with alkaline hydrogen carbonate medicinal healing water, which is used mainly to treat the following disorders:

  • Chronic degenerative spine and joint complaints
  • Chronic inflammatory phase of locomotive diseases
  • Soft tissue rheumatism
  • Muscle cramp (the reduction of)
  • Muscle bruising and the wearing out of joints caused by jolts and jerks

  • After treatment of accidents
  • Conditions following neurological disease and neurosurgical operations
  • After treatment following orthopaedic and rheum surgical operations
  • Chronic gynaecological disease including inflammation and infertility
  • Symptoms of menopause
  • Chronic diseases of the respiratory system
  • After treatment following severe inflammation of air tract
  • Asthmatic bronchitis

Not advisable for those suffering from

  • Severe heart, circulation and breathing disorders
